Fun Flaneur Finds: South Carolina
Anyone who reads the Everyday Tourist blog regularly will know I love to flaneur i.e. wander aimlessly. And if you follow me on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook or Bluesky, you will know that I love to post my “fun flaneur finds” almost daily.
In this blog I have gathered up some of the many fun flaneur finds from a recent trip to South Carolina, from Charleston to Florence from Conway to Myrtle Beach. Hope you enjoy reading this blog as much as did putting it together.
Found this book in this little library in Coway SC.
I can’t pass by a Little Library without looking in. You never know what you will find.
Found this Art-O-Mat in the lobby of the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art, which is one of Charleston’s hidden gems.
We actually have an artwork from and Art-O-Mat. Back in the ‘90s, Calgary’s Glenbow Museum had one and we purchased a Bart Habermiller piece.
Yes inside the Gretchen Scott women’s fashion store is a “man cave.” Yes it has comfy seating, TV, newspapers and a beer fridge. Very cool. If you like art it also has several mid-century prints by the likes of Miro and Calder.
The Gretel’s Candy House was too much fun inside and out.
We drove by this strange looking building several times. didn’t go in this time.
On our way to Charleston we took a break at Georgetown to wander its Main Street and found these fun “Blind Date” packages. I have seen this before in a bookstore but this was fun twist.
Have you ever heard of spaghetti ice cream? I hadn’t until I walked by the IC Pasta shop in downtown Conway. They also have a “Cheese Burger” desert with ice cream, that looks like a burger but isn’t.
While wandering we found Charleston’s old post office building and decided to drop in. To our surprise we found a small post office museum with fun artifacts like this bike.
I love browsing the book shelves at thrift stores, I couldn’t resist this one.
One afternoon in downtown Conway there was a parade of women dressed like this. Turns out there is a Mrs. Roper (from Threes Company) cult.
The Conway Glass studio was a fun flaneur find. Only open to the public on Wednesday it is worth a visit. Not only do they do commissioned stain-glass works but they have some fun glass pieces for home decor.
I couldn’t believe how big Valentine’s Day is in South Carolina. Houses were decorated like it was Christmas or Halloween.
While flaneur the residential streets of Conway we found this unique door decoration.
In the Preservation Society of Charleston’s store on King Street are hundreds of bow ties.
Brackish began in 2007, with a singular feather bow tie designed by Ben Ross and gifted to his groomsman, Jeff Plotner.
My other car is a “Fire Truck.” While golfing The Hacker golf course we saw this house with a NYC firetruck.
Downtown Conway is full of fun surprises, like this mini art gallery.
They don’t make store entrances like this anymore.
I found a couple along King Street in Charleston.
One of the things I love to do when flaneuring is “window looking” i.e. looking closely into store windows for fun reflections like this one. I love fun, funky and quirky window displays like this one. STUDs is an earring store on King Street in Charleston.
Ollie’s was a fun find, with its amazing signage.
The walls above the shelves of the store are decorated with fun, cheesy advertising.
Seemed ironic to find this grave stone in the Conway cemetery while we were on holidays.
