Mumbai Morning: Newspaper and Market Fun!
As an “Every Day” Tourist, one of the first things I do each morning is check my Facebook page to see what my friends who are travelling have posted. For the past couple of weeks I have been faithfully reading posts and enjoying the photos of Judy who has been on an amazing Asian adventure, while Laurence has been posting stories of their scooter trip along the back roads of Vietnam and beyond. I will probably never get to Asia (can’t imagine enduring the long fight to get there), but I can travel vicariously through my friends. And so can you!
In this blog, I am going to share with you Judy’s post from Mumbai where she got up early to experience the city’s amazing morning animation, from newspaper deliveries to fish market, from flower market to fruit and vegetable market.
Every Day Tourist Tip: Whenever you are in a new city you should make a point of exploring the city not just in the daytime and nighttime, but in the early morning as cities often have a different vibe at that time of the day.
Unloading the newspapers from the delivery truck.
Bundling up the various newspapers for delivery. The men ‘purchased’ the newspapers from the publishers and then ‘resell’ them to those who deliver them to homes.
Each ‘bundle is specifically created for a homeowner who specifies which papers they want to get;
Mumbai’s early morning streets are great for street photography.
You never know what you will find at the fish market.
There is lots of work to do before the vegetables are ready for sale.
The Flower Market stalls are a kaleidoscope of colour.
A photo is worth a 1,000s words.
Flower market is like eye candy with its amazing array of colours.
Last Word
Mumbai has so many newspapers because of its large and diverse population. It is estimated the city has a population of 12.5 million with a regional population of 23 million. There are 16 major languages spoken in Mumbai and each has a robust culture with its own news.
Mumbai with its 150 km coastline is known for its variety of saltwater fish, including pomfret, kingfish, Indian salmon and Bombay duck. The oldest fish market Sasson Docks dates back to 1875.
Mumbai’s Dadar Flower Market, also known as “pool gully” or “flower street” is a vibrant street market located under the Dadar Flyover. It is known for its early morning animation and variety of flowers, including marigolds, roses and lilies. It is an amazing sensory experience with intense colours and smells.
I can’t wait until Judy heads out on her next adventure so I can travel vicariously with her again.
