Window Licking Fun In London
One of my favourite things to do when flaneuring the streets of a new city is to look for fun, funky and quirky (FFQ) windows. I can’t remember when if first started - I am thinking Paris.
Window licking photography has become a a key element of my urban photography practice.
This one is for CJC who loves meringues….
Window Licking?
Oh! For those who don’t know “window licking” is the literal English translation of the French term for window shopping - "léche-vitrines."
London has some great windows, but I am still thinking Florence and Chicago might have the best I have seen. One of the unique things about London is their FFQ windows can be found on any one of dozens of “high streets” aka “main streets” scattered around the city. In fact some of the best windows down narrow lanes where you wouldn’t think there were any shops.
In Florence and Chicago the best windows are mainly on Via Tornabuoni and Miracle Mile respectfully.

I have purposely left out Christmas windows from London’s department stores and luxury shops as they will be part of another blog. Enjoy the show….

“The Conversation” looking through the window into a bespoke furniture store….everything in London is “bespoke this and bespoke that!”
One of the quirky things about walking around London is that you can see into many of the workspaces, especially the co-work spaces of which there seems to be a lot. Most have a funky lounge at street level with windows that allows voyeurs like me to photograph their playgrounds.
Londoners seem to like to have fun with their work windows.
This was a new office building that had all of its sidewalk windows frosted except for a few that had these tiny openings where you could look in and see what is happening. How voyeuristic? How cool!
The salons and nail shops also have fun ways to play “peek-a-boo” with pedestrians.
In addition to lots of co-work spaces, London also seems to have lots of shared event, meeting and conference space. Seems like nobody has meeting anymore they just have events…..
Haunting….
