What you need to know before travelling to India?

India is not only a huge country, but it is very diverse with 28 states, 8 union territories each with its own culture, climate and laws, so it is important to do your homework before you go.  It can all be a bit overwhelming but don’t be intimidated.

Here are just a few of the things you need to know before you go.

Medical Insurance

While nobody wants to get sick or injured when travelling, it happens. You should always make sure you have travel insurance when travelling in a foreign country.

Bring Cash

India is a cash economy, so don’t expect to use your credit card everywhere. Bring lots of cash as you will need it for everything from street food to tickets.  You may also find your Bank Card doesn’t work at any Indian ATM, if you find one that works be sure to take out extra so you don’t waste time looking for an ATM that works.

Online Fun

You will want to bring a valid SIM card with you as you will need be online for everything from booking trains to getting tickets to attractions.

Tuk Tuk Fun

One of the most common ways to get around in India is in Tuk Tuks – three-wheeled, open-air vehicles. The drivers will always give you an inflated price so you will have to bargain with them. Most rides are between 100 and 200 rupees. FYI: 100 rupees is about $1.67 Canadian dollars.

Trains & Transit

Don’t be surprised if you have to hand over your bags to go through an X-ray machine before getting on metro and trains.

Street Food Fun

And while eating street food is “must do” experience it comes with some risks so be careful. While India has many beautiful places if you are in congested cities, you will encounter air pollution far greater than anything in North America Take it easy when you first arrive as it will take some time for your body to adjust to different cuisine and air quality.

Traffic Fun

While the streets look chaotic, crossing the road isn’t as hard as it looks. Somehow the traffic will go around you, not sure how but it does.

Warnings
