Photo Essay: Southern Alberta's Beautiful Fall Colours

When thinking of where to find spectacular Fall colours most people think of Ontario, Quebec, the Maritimes and NE United States, but not Alberta. While Alberta may not have the red colours of the east, it has a spectrum of beautiful yellow hues.  And given yellow is my favourite colour, I love Fall in Southern Alberta. Over the years I have collect hundreds of everyday Fall photos, mostly taken on my walks in Calgary and while playing golf at Redwood Meadows in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

One of the most unique things about Alberta’s Fall colours is the Larch Tree, which is the only coniferous tree that loses it needles every year like deciduous tree. But before they fall off the needles turn to gold. The Larch Valley Trail in Banff National Park is a popular hike for many in the Fall.  Personally, I can just walk across the street into Grand Trunk Park to have the Larch Trees experience.

I thought would be fun to create a photo essay of “Southern Alberta’s beautiful fall colours.”

This photo is not photoshopped. It was taken late afternoon along the Crowchild Trail pathway. A single leaf was clinging to the branch with the sun shinning through it.

Yes there are some red maple leaves in Alberta. While these maple trees are not native to the province they have been introduced and will grow in some locations. This a couple of blocks from our house and ironically on the front yard of a house we considered buying.

There are native berry bushes the do provide some red colour in the Fall.

I love the reflection of the fall colours in ponds.

This was a fun flaneur find in a house under construction with a hole in the roof at the entrance to allow light in and a quirky view up.

Fall is also a time when the sunset and sunrises are the most colourful.

I am also intrigued by fall leaves floating in the ponds.
